Officials arrested a 29-year-old St Joseph man for leaving the scene of an accident that killed a ten year old boy. According to a news release from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, troopers arrested Michael Burgess and recovered his Jeep abandoned in rural Buchanan County.
Burgess was formally charged Wednesday with 2nd degree involuntary manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident. Bond was set at 50-thousand dollars, and Burgess remains in custody pending arraignment tentatively set for Tuesday July 8th.
According to the patrol's online accident report, Burgess left the scene after the Jeep Cherokee he was driving rear-ended another vehicle on US-59 south of St Joseph on June 27th. 10-year-old Keenan Hershberger of Chillicothe was rushed to Children's Mercy Hospital where he died the following day.
