Kansas Legislature Adjourns Wrap-Up Session
|
The Kansas legislature adjourned Wednesday night after a flurry of activity, bringing a contentious wrap-up session to a close.
The House approved yet another bill allowing the expansion of a southwestern Kansas coal plant. The measure passed on a vote of 76-48 after passing the Senate Tuesday. That voting margin would not be enough to override an expected veto from Governor Kathleen Sebelius, who has vetoed to previous coal-plant measures.
The House and Senate approved and sent to the governor a measure supporting future efforts to produce nuclear power in Kansas. The bill would allow utilities to recover planning costs for a nuclear power plant. It would also create an advisory committee on nuclear power proposals, and give state utility regulators oversight over the industry.
Lawmakers approved a measure requiring photo identification for voters that would also schedule a presidential primary in 2012 on a Saturday. Under the measure, passed by both the House and the Senate on Tuesday, voters would have to start showing identification starting in 2010. The measure requires the state to issue photo ID's to poor people for free. Senior citizens, disabled people, and military personnel would be exempt from the ID requirements at the polls. |
